The California Workforce Accelerator (CWA), an innovative new initiative from Calbright, the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), and NexusEdge that has officially launched to revolutionize workforce education for community college students. This program leverages employer-designed skills-based coursework to provide students with direct pathways to internships and opportunities at some of the world’s most prominent companies, including Citigroup, Snap, HubSpot, and Northrop Grumman.

With the California Workforce Accelerator, community college instructors can seamlessly integrate industry-specific training modules into their existing classrooms through Canvas with just a few clicks. These modules, created by employers, cover cutting-edge skills such as AI workforce training from HubSpot and user interface and user experience design from Figma. The program’s design ensures that instructors can offer this vital content without adding extra grading or coursework creation to their workload. All assessments are automatically graded, allowing faculty to implement the program with minimal time investment—taking less than five minutes to set up.

Upon completing these courses and passing the exams, students receive digital credentials that they can display on LinkedIn or in their portfolios. These credentials help students stand out to employers and automatically place them into a pipeline for internships and jobs with participating companies. By equipping students with in-demand skills and industry-recognized certifications, the California Workforce Accelerator aims to close the skills gap and create new opportunities for underserved students across the state.

As a key component of California’s workforce development strategy, this initiative embraces the principles of skills-based hiring, prioritizing students’ mastery of competencies rather than traditional academic qualifications. By doing so, the CWA helps to ensure that students graduate with both the education and the real-world skills they need to enter the workforce faster and more prepared than ever before.
